29 September Competition, Alexandria Museum of Art, Louisiana

The 29th September Competition presented by the Alexandria Museum of Art. is an exhibition selected by juror Francis Pavy from national and international submissions highlighting contemporary art practices in all media.  47 artworks selected from over 300 international submissions are included in the exhibition and featured in a full-color print catalog.  My emblematic tapestry, One Ought Not to Wrestle Ghosts, was selected for this exhibition.

Brooklyn, NY – 440 Gallery presents Personal is Political is Personal. In this intensely political year we hear sound bites and promises that can seem abstract unless it affects us personally. Black Lives Matter. Gender Equality. Gun Control. It’s all just words until we see a child’s body washed ashore, a routine traffic stop becomes deadly, or a family home is destroyed at high tide. 440 Gallery’s theme show this year is centered on the personal effects of politics.

Water Ecologies, Juried by Basia Irland, Transition Gallery, Idaho State University

Unraveling Ecology (spill) was exhibited as part of the Water Ecologies, curated by Basia Irland.  It is a Jacquard Woven Tapestry (in memory of the devastating Gulf Oil Spill) and accompanying fiber-based drawing (utilizing yarn from the unraveling tapestry) of a oil soaked pelican.

The Exhibit: The South is emerging as hub for creativity. Recently Raleigh adopted a vision to become the Southern Capital for Arts and Culture. To showcase the best artwork from the region here in Raleigh, SCOPE features variations on the southern landscape; looking at the region through the eyes of its artists. Works feature visual interpretations of metropolitan, coastal and rural areas of the southern states.

I was recently asked to look at the work of 166 talented artists and pick 40 for a show. The results? 126 disgruntled artists muttering “What does he know?” And they’re right! What do I know? Please keep that attitude, my fellow artists. You have many victories ahead. As for the rest of you, please savor. This is a wonderful show. Inspire each other, secretly know you’re the best one and keep trudging out to that studio every day. The Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition is the second-longest running juried print and drawing competition in the country. Every two years it features the best contemporary graphic artwork from around the globe. All accepted artwork is featured on the exhibition website.

The 35th Bradley International features the work of 108 artists from across the globe. This years juror is Beth Grabowski, Professor and Assistant Department Chair at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
